Three quarters of a million people attend Hardly Strictly Bluegrass – a San Francisco Hotel that takes place near Hotel Diva.
During the last week of September, music fans from far and wide descend upon storied Golden Gate Park, which sheltered the survivors of the 1906 earthquake and was the site of the Human-Be-In, which kicked off the Summer of Love in 1967.
What started in 2001 as a “strictly bluegrass” Event has expanded into an affair that welcomes all genres of music. Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is a free music festival that draws not only some of the biggest names in popular music, but the top talent from genres across the board. Over 750,000 music lovers make their way to this San Francisco Event every year.
Past bluegrass greats that have performed at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass include legend Earl Scruggs, Peter Rowan, who was a member of Old and in the Way, along with San Francisco native and founding Grateful Dead member Jerry Garcia. Ricky Scaggs & Kentucky Thunder have also performed at this San Francisco Event. From the world of popular music, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris and Nick Lowe have all played the festival.
Warren Hellman, the Bay Area venture capitalist who founded Hardly Strictly, also funds the festival along with other local businesses. Hellman said he “wanted to keep it free and entirely non-commercial” for the benefit of the music and the Bay Area community. This year’s lineup has yet to be announced, but a full schedule of performers will be available on the Event website as the date draws closer.
